“150″ Documentary for Awareness of Autism in America
![]()
Recently, I took on the responsibility of raising money for a documentary film, which will feature one of my most beloved students. Every week I will write about one of the films objectives. Join me as I post personal stories as a behavioral therapist….and stories the lives of those who work to make a difference.
The Documentary In Detail
Our objectives in presenting this documentary on autism treatment are:
- To expose and explore the conflict between families and the government entities providing services for autistic children.
- To show the process that families of autistic children must go through in order to receive services from the government.
- To show the available treatments for autism, and show how children can progress by receiving such treatment by following certain children through a period of therapy.
- To introduce the non-public agencies (“NPAs”) that provide services for autistic children and show their role in an autistic child’s development.
- Show costs and benefits of public-sponsored autism therapy and education opportunities.
- Show autism “advocates” at work guiding and instructing families, and representing them in education hearings where therapy programs are negotiated.
- To briefly review some of the major forces that have changed autism treatment over the last 50 years: the lawsuits, causes, and legislation that have ultimately provided services for autism.
- To increase public knowledge about autism and what autistic children can become.
- To promote the cause of autism research and encourage wider participation.
- To show how autism is a peculiar condition in that it carries with it more social issues, stigmas and internal controversies than other illnesses.
- To briefly overview the current research on the causes of autism and which popular causes have been proven wrong by research.
- To explore how the current therapy and education systems for autistic children can be improved, and what obstacles impede that progress.
